John is a Chartered Marine Engineer, a marine surveyor and a consultant with an MA in Marine Warranty Surveying and Shipyard Risk Assessment; he is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (FIMarEST).

Having started his career with Hunting & Son of Newcastle, he sailed on many types of ship with diverse engines.  He has a combined first class steam and motor Certificate of Competency and sailed as Chief Engineer on both turbine machinery and diesel engine vessels.

As a surveyor, John worked for The Salvage Association for 26 years before starting JSL Marine Associates Ltd in 2007, with many friends and colleagues around the world.  During the next eight years he was active in shipyard risk assessment in shipyards in every region of the maritime world.  Since April 2015 John has stopped active surveying and concentrates instead on consultancy and litigation support through JSL Marine Limited.
